Siew is an Associate working in the legal areas of Information Technology & Software, Commercial, Corporate Governance, Immigration and Litigation. She graduated as the dux of Griffith University Law School in 2018, receiving the Dean’s Award and the state-wide WLAQ’s Una Prentice Award. She was admitted as a solicitor to the Supreme Court of Queensland in 2019.
Siew was a Senior Corporate Counsel working at a global technology and cybersecurity company for several years. She was based at the company’s headquarters in Prague, Czech Republic, advising on and handling matters in Commercial Law, Compliance, Litigation and Dispute Resolution. She returned to Brisbane in 2023 and worked in private practice at a national law firm, managing a successful outcome in a civil litigation trial matter as the instructing solicitor, and providing cybersecurity insurance coverage advice.
Her legal responsibilities have included:
Managing disputes and litigation; negotiating with partners, vendors and suppliers, reviewing and drafting clauses in contracts in a wide range of areas, including Software as a Service contracts (SaaS), software development contracts, Original Equipment Manufacturer contracts, IT procurement contracts, partner, supplier, and consumer contracts, sales & marketing contracts, consultant agreements, and other commercial contracts, providing legal advice in areas such as privacy and data governance, consumer fairness, export control, modern slavery, and coverage advice for cybersecurity insurance.
Siew’s legal work covered countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and Japan.
Highlights:
- Worked together with external counsels in the US to provide legal arguments in a US arbitration held in California, US, and in a civil litigation trial (scheduled for five days) in the District Court of Queensland
- Streamlined the legal aspects of debt collection, including dispute resolution.
- Handled international commercial contracts and transactions.
- Drafted the Modern Slavery Transparency Statements in compliance with Modern Slavery regulations, driving change and leading the Modern Slavery compliance project within the organisation, and filling in necessary gaps in the process and system.
- Drafted the Supplier Guidelines, which requires suppliers to comply with an international code of conduct.
- Drafted the first unified General Data Protection Regulation-compliant Privacy Policy in time for the rollout of the GDPR in the European Union.
- Updated various other policies.
- Provided legal advice in various areas, including privacy, consumer fairness, export control, modern slavery, and intellectual property.
- Guided the business and IT teams in export control compliance by providing legal advice and driving solutions; and
- Provided coverage advice for cybersecurity insurance, including being involved in the aftermath of major cybersecurity breaches in Australia.
In addition to practising law, Siew attends church and has served as a connect group leader for several years. She has also volunteered in various other areas, including teaching English to refugees and migrants, and did a legal clinic assisting refugees as part of her law degree. Her other interests include reading, writing, listening to music, bushwalking or hiking, swimming, and going to the beach.
